Coconut butter oil

Coconut butter as coconut cooking oil is good for your nutrition

Coconut butter is the solidified form of virgin or unrefined coconut oil.  Since it is coco oil, it can also provide you the nutritional and health benefits you get from the liquid form of coconut oil.

Coco butter is mainly used as shortening in baking to give a crumbly texture in cookies or cakes and it can also be used in cooking.  However, when you would want to use higher amount of heat in frying foods, refined coconut oil is more suitable for it.  The refining process increases the smoking point of this type of oil.

Characteristics of Coconut butter

• Natural
It is from pure and virgin coconut oil extracted from fresh coconut meat and produced without mechanical processes like bleaching, deodorizing, or fractionating.  More so, coco butter does not go through hydrogenation that would create trans-fatty acids which are detrimental to cardiac health.  Coconut butter remains solid when in temperatures of less than 76°F.

• Stable
Coconut butter or oil is said to be the most stable of all types of oil.  It has a very long shelf life and is not prone to early rancidity (it can last for more than a year).  This does not oxidize at high temperatures unlike other oils that may create trans-fatty acids when heated.  It has a smoke point of 350°F.

• Soluble fat
Virgin coconut oil, even in solid form, still contains medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) unlike other saturated fats, cooking oils, and dairy butter that consists long chain fatty acids or LCFAs.  Long chain fatty acids are fats that require more effort to digest and needs more enzymes so to be absorbed by the body.  Most likely, they become body fat that may clog the blood vessels and may lead to heart diseases.

MCFAs are the more soluble fats – they are easily converted to nutrients that the body needs that leads to boosting one’s energy. They do not increase bad cholesterol levels in the blood and does not lead to weight gain.  These behaviors of MCFAs make them the kind of fat you want and need for your body.

• Healthy
More soluble fats mean they are better for your health and nutrition.  MCFAs in virgin coconut oil consists lauric, capric, and caprylic acids that are converted into anti-microbial, antiviral, and antibacterial agents when digested and mixed with other good bacteria.  Lauric acid, particularly, is an essential fatty acid for strengthening the immune system.

What is coconut butter for?

The coconut oil diet is a program wherein you are to change unhealthy oils with coconut oil for health purposes and for you to lose weight.  This may also be recommended for those with heart and thyroid problems provided that there is clinical supervision. Coco butter can be a part of this nutritional diet as:

• Coconut cooking oil
Coconut butter is a healthier substitute for other kinds of butter or margarine in baking cookies and cakes.  It is also suitable for sautéing vegetable, or frying pancakes and eggs.  Its sweet aroma adds more enticement to the food itself!

You can also try making traditional theater popcorns with the use of coco butter. Many years ago, manufacturers of popcorn for movie houses used to use coconut butter or oil.  When bad press about coco oil being very unhealthy came out, manufacturers had to change the oils that they used.  Now that coco oil has somehow regained its good reputation as being healthy oil for cooking, some people already use this oil again for their popcorns.

• Spread
Generally, coconut butter is not used as spreads like ordinary dairy butter.  However, there are several manufacturers that made innovations of coconut butter and added some more flavors to it to make it suitable as sandwich or bread spreads.  Some coconut butter is made from coconut milk but technically this is not coco butter but only called by such name.

With all its essential fatty acids, coconut cooking oil in the form of butter should be part of your nutritional habits in order to improve your health.
