Extra virgin coconut oil

The truth behind Extra Virgin Coconut oil

Virgin coconut oil has been considered to be miracle oil for its beneficial effects to health, beauty, and nutrition.

Because of these countless benefits, coco oil is sometimes called as the “drugstore in a bottle” (as they are retailed in bottles)  In effect, competition between coco oil dealers grew stiff and some sellers came up with advertising a better product than virgin coco oil labeled as extra virgin coconut oil.

What exactly is extra virgin coconut oil?

According to some manufacturers, this extra virgin type of coconut oil is the best choice.  It is made from fresh coconut meat, cold-pressed, and fermented – processes that are done in an all-natural way. It is not refined oil, so it is the purest of all coconut oils.  But if you come to think of it, this is also exactly the same definition of virgin coconut oil.

What makes the difference? Just the name.

The term extra virgin is in fact borrowed from the olive oil industry and there is no such terminology or standard that will define what is extra virgin in the coconut oil industry.

In the olive oil industry, “extra” virgin refers to the level of acidity, taste, and grade of the oil.

• Virgin olive oil has an acidity of less than 2%.  It is said to taste good but is much less “perfect” than the extra virgin olive oil.

• Extra Virgin Olive oil, instead, is a highest quality of virgin olive oil with less than 1% or no more than 0.8% free oleic acid.  This has the best taste among the other types of olive oil.

As said, no such standard has been set in the coconut oil industry that entitles any dealer or manufacturer to label his product as extra virgin coconut oil.

If you come across this categorization, you have to understand that there is no reality behind it.  It is only a marketing strategy used by opportunistic sellers in order to make their product appear to have better quality than the “ordinary” virgin coconut oil.  Extra virgin coconut oil is simply virgin coconut oil!

At the end of the day, you might be paying extra but not getting more of the extra benefits that their product implied.

If you are looking for the best coconut oil, buying virgin coconut oil would be more than enough.
